Collect them all or maybe pair them with our brand new case and all over print hoodie. It happened. [music] After 10 long years, Amazon has finally given me a fresh reason to be excited about the Kindle again. [music] The Color Soft introduces Color E ink, which made a great first impression on me and my kids with colors that I might not describe as vibrant, but I would certainly describe as more immersive. Compared to Amazon's monochromatic offerings, it really helps illustrations jump off the page and come to life. Other than that, well, it's a Kindle. You know, it's reasonably light at just 219 g. Feels pretty good in the hands. And this one stayed relatively smudge-free despite being handled for weeks by a teenage boy who eats constantly. and didn't bother to wipe down the screen before the shoot. During that time, it only needed to be charged once thanks to its beefy 2310 mAh battery. By the way, if like me, you haven't upgraded your Kindle in a while, charging has been via USBC ever since the Paper White 5. But why am I the one talking right now? The real reason we're doing this video, aside from me just wanting a new Kindle, was that my son finally took an interest in the family business, asking me if he could help write and host a video. Not wanting to nepotism him straight to the top, I gave him the least glamorous possible assignment, a Kindle review. Let's see how he does. Coming back to battery life, Amazon claims you can expect up to 8 [music] weeks. I'm not sure I quite agree with that. Maybe if you read like a few chapters a day, but I will say that between the many hours of battery life, not to mention almost zero standby drain, it will comfortably outlast any reading device you have that isn't a black and white e-reader or a literal book. And when you finally need to charge it, you can do so in just a couple hours. [music] As for using it, how do I say this? Spec-wise, it should crush its black and white cousin, the Paper White 6. I mean, it's got twice the memory, a processor that runs at twice the speed. But while that's great on paper, it doesn't feel twice as strong in daily use. Look at this. While the double tap anywhere gesture is a convenient timesaver, the animation for page flipping takes noticeably longer than the Paperwhite. And while I wish Amazon could fix this by just adding a page turn speed setting, look at this. The store has the same issue. There's no way they want to slow down the process of selling more ebooks. So why is it so slow? Before you buy one, the Coloroft has another downside that could be a dealbreaker for you. See, one of the key benefits of e- in displays is their minimal eye fatigue. This is largely thanks to their lack of a backlight, but crisp, sharp text is a major bonus as well. And the Coloroft is no exception. Boasting a sharp 300 PPI black and white image. Wait, black and white image? Yeah, [music] it does color, of course, but only at 150 ppi. That's because it uses an extra color layer on top of your typical black and white layer that you might be used to. Some people might feel that enjoying books, comics, and manga in color isn't worth that trade-off, especially after they spent so much money. But for me, there's no going back. I think it's great and in some cases offers a clear benefit to clarity as well. Look at this comic cover. Sure, [music] the grayscale image is sharper, but to my eyes, the color image helps separate the various [music] characters, making it easier to see the artist's intent. It's obviously not as vibrant as reading on a phone, though. So, how does that compare? Honestly, if it's early in the day and my eyes aren't tired, I'd probably use the app. It's super similar to the Kindle experience without having to pay for a separate device. The interface runs faster. You get speakers so you can listen to your audiobooks out loud rather than over Bluetooth speakers. And there are even some extra features. I really like WordRunner. It lets you use a method of reading called RSVP reading, which helps you process information faster without sacrificing retention. The Kindle literally can't do this because of its low refresh rates. So, it's a nice little bonus. With that said, reading on a phone is full of downsides, too. Most phones can't get dim enough for your weary midnight eyes. A smaller screen means more page flips. You can't expect a super long battery life. And if you're anything like me, your phone is full of distracting apps and notifications. Sorry. That is a big part of why the Kindle has been such a success for Amazon over the years. They've managed to strike a great balance of being capable. It even has a web browser so you can scope out the latest deals at ltstore.com like our new colored transparent screwdrivers, but also slow enough that you can't really get a good doom scroll going. For that reason, the Coloroft alone has racked up over 4,000 reviews. And [music] wait, but they aren't really that positive, are they? At just 3.8 stars for the signature edition. I mean, my son and I both like it. What's up with that? As it turns out, a lot of that negativity was actually back when it launched with users like Vinnie, [music] Michael, and Sam here reporting an ugly yellow gradient at the bottom of the display. [music] Amazon has promised to resolve the issue, but that was over a year ago, and you can find reports of it still happening as recently as a few months back, but maybe it's mostly fine now because the star rating has climbed since that time. It was actually still under three stars back when I first [music] ordered it, and I personally have never experienced the issue. Overall, I've [music] been pretty happy with this thing, and that's without even needing to test its rated resistance to both fresh and even salt water. But none of that makes it an obvious buy either. Sure, by comparison, the paper white feels like watching a fireworks show on a black and white TV, but Amazon is charging a lot of money for their color pictures. And adding insult to injury, I found multiple cases where books are more expensive on the Kindle than they are as [music] a paperback. For example, why the heck is Harry Potter pricier on a device I already paid $280 for? You paid for. That's not the point, Dad. What's important is this is a luxury device costing more than twice as much as a paper weight and the customers for it should be treated fairly. He's right. Even competing color e-readers like the Coobo Clara Color are marketkedly less expensive which makes the Color Soft a gorgeous device that I love to use but a tough sell from a value standpoint. [music] At the end of the day then the choice is yours. Kindle or alternative brand, color or black and white. Segue or sponsor. >> Okay. Um um I wanted to express how I feel about today's sponsor, War Thunder. But how? Maybe a little something like this. What's up, crew? It's your boy You want to join my convoy? Then get ready to deploy to the most comprehensive vehicle combat game ever made. This is not a decoy. [music] It's a real McCoy. Get ready to employ more than 2500 realistically detailed tanks, headlines, helicopters, ships. And you can say ahoy cuz ships and cry tears of soy right before I destroy all of your stuff, boy. Oh no. The last page didn't print. Um, turn off. Turn off. Uh. Um, so me and 70 million other players uh think War Thunder is tight. Um, come and play with us on PC, console, and your phone for free. Thanks for watching. If you guys like this video, make sure to check out the last e- NVIDIA we did. It went into a little bit more depth about how exactly these [music] super cool displays actually work."}
