And what I mean by that is Linus went on Jimmy Fallon and got to show it off. This is actually the first one he showed off where it did work, unlike his failed second attempt. [music] And it's finally in our hands here to give it a test drive. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, this is the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 rollable, meaning it has a rollable display that adds an extra 2.7 inches to your screen. I really hope it translates to be as cool as it sounds, but we're going to unbox it first, take a look at it, and then make our conclusion. Pretty simple packaging. I thought it'd be a lot more complex. I don't know why. Something about this being a mechanical rolling display kind of makes me have some doubts about how it's going to work. Obviously, anything physically moving in a device is a possible point of failure. I know LG for a long time had a phone that actually had a camera that slid in and out, and that camera was the biggest fail point. Wow, right away this is a heavy laptop. It does not look like that when you see how big it is, but there it is. Front and center. Other than that, a little bit of propaganda, a power brick, our USB-C to C cable. Oh, it's 6 ft. Wow, really not a whole lot. Laptops don't come with a whole bunch nowadays, but hey, that's fine. Makes it nice and simple then. The charger itself, it has a big number 65 on it. So, I'm hoping that that means it's a 65 W charger. Yeah, there it is. There is a big 65 W. Well, big is relative. It's quite small actually on the top there. But before we do the teardown or even open this thing up, let's look at all of the external IO. On the left side here, got a headphone audio jack. Perfect nowadays. I still like that some laptops include that. Two USB-C ports. Now, the laptop does have two Thunderbolt 4 ports. I don't see the little lightning logo there, so I wonder if they're on Nope, they're not on this side, so that must be it. Is that all of the IO? There's nothing on the back and there's a power button on this side. That is it? Well, physical camera switch, but that doesn't count as IO. I'm kind of annoyed by that. I don't know why they didn't include like an HDMI port. I guess you don't need an extra screen cuz you can extend maybe cuz you can extend this one. I Oh, wow. Oh, oh my gosh. I don't know if that translated on camera. I can immediately tell this display is a flexible OLED display. It has a weird sound to it. I don't know if that's going to get picked up on the mic. I am going to try though. Can you hear anything? It might be too faint. I don't even know, but like it's something I found with my Fold 4, which also had a flexible OLED display. You can actually hear it if you have used it for a long period of time especially. >> [music] >> And you can especially see it at the bottom there. You kind of see how the screen when I catch the light, it's not actually flat or it doesn't look like a matte look like a traditional laptop display might have. You can actually see kind of the creases that are in these rollable displays. I hope that that kind of gets buffed out when you have something on the screen. We're going to have to wait and find out. I actually went to get a side profile of the screen and you can even see it here the the way [music] it distorts the desk pad gives another great example of how this screen actually kind of looks. But, what powers this device is the Intel Core Ultra 7, the 258V. It's an eight-core, eight-thread processor. So, it's not the most powerful thing we've seen in a laptop, which isn't a bad thing. I don't actually think shoving as much power into a device is super important. I prefer battery life for my laptops unless it's a gaming laptop. On top of that, it has 32 gigs of LPDDR5X memory at 8,533 megatransfers a second. The difference is this is soldered. We will open it up to take a look at it, but it means you won't be able to upgrade or change it down the line. And our version has a 1 TB SSD. When I looked at the website for this device, I didn't actually see if you could configure it a little bit, so I don't know if you can expand and add up to 2 TB directly from Lenovo or if you have to add it yourself by opening it up. Again, something we're going to look at in a little bit here. And then obviously it's the screen, which I cannot wait to to turn on and take a look at. It is a 120 Hz screen that they claim gets to 400 nits in brightness. We have lab's results, which we'll go over. And in its closed, well, not closed, I guess this is open, but in its unextended state, if that's how you want to describe it, the resolution is 2,000 by 1,600. And then when it gets expanded, it's 2,000 by 2,350, which is actually pretty cool. In some of the product demos, they show it's almost like having two 16 by 9 monitors stacked on top of each other, which for productivity sake could be a game changer on the go. But we need to fire this bad boy up and actually take a look at it. All right, I hit the power button. Here we go. Booting it up. Ooh, it actually really doesn't want to open further than this, which again, maybe is a good thing because of how the rollable display works, but I mean, my laptop, which is also Lenovo, the amount of times I use it basically fully extended because as you can see, mine's touchscreen, so I like to on set hold it and >> [music] >> tap away. Not being able to even go like more than that is pretty interesting. The screen looks really good. I don't know if it'll translate on camera. I mean, on camera you can still see the warping, but in person, I don't see that warping anymore. >> [music] >> Got our 120 Hz display here. Ooh, this trackpad is garbage. Do you hear that? It sounds like a springboard. Like I actually feel like my finger is like off of it. Like visually, I guess it looks kind of cool cuz it doesn't look like my hands moving much, but we're going to do one test before we get to the display, which I know is the big selling point. I want to listen to audio on this thing. I hope that with a device this thick, they were able to cram some pretty decent speakers in there. So let's give our good old crab rave a try. >> [music] >> Okay. I'm very happy with those speakers personally. I've heard much worse speakers in laptops. The only downside I noticed, but maybe it's a good thing too, if depending on if you like the volume of it, I felt the laptop vibrate at [music] its peak volume. It felt like it was almost being absorbed by the chassis a little bit and when I had my hands rested here, I could feel it. You know what? They're good quality speakers though. That I will say. They sound a lot better than I was expecting. So hey, negative one point for the trackpad, but plus one for the speakers I guess. K, the moment you've all been waiting for. We're going to extend this bad boy. I hope you're excited cuz it's about to get a little excited. Just like I'm excited to tell you. But our sponsor, Saley. If you're looking at doing any sort of traveling in the near future, keep in mind you need to stay connected with your friends and family back home. Saley e SIMs make this both simple and affordable. There's no need to hunt for Wi-Fi in a foreign country or buy a SIM from a sketchy kiosk on the street. With Saley, you just download it once and you're connected and good to go. Even if you happen to be hopping from country to country like in Europe for example. So you can download the app and get 15% off your plan with code ShortCircuit or go to saley.com/shortcircuit. So all I'd have to do, do not press hard on the screen. Do not let foreign objects near the rod area. Yeah, look, I know it's about to get excited, but you don't have to call it the rod area. Please ensure that the screen's opening angle is greater than 90. And I should just be able to hit the button. >> [music] >> That's pretty cool, MAN. WOW. OKAY, LISTEN. I know that my wife has been telling me for years that 2.7 in is not a lot. This makes this display feel massive though. Holy cow. So, you can see Oh god, we're going to tip it slowly. It gained about this much from the original closed position to the fully open position. And yes, you can definitely see there's a pretty nasty crease right about here. And kind of along this bottom section just in general. But when I'm looking at it directly like this, it's pretty hard to tell. I wish I could get you guys a good angle that you won't catch any light on, but man, that was really cool, dude. It's not as loud as I expected it to be. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's audible, but I kind of maybe it's cuz I just imagine like a transformer. Just like Like [laughter] but you know, just like Dude, this is cool, man. It looks comical. This looks like the iPhone 5 meme from back in the day when it was like the iPhone 20 is going to be 20 m long, right? Okay, I want to test their claim about the 2 16 by 9 monitors. So, I'm going to open Edge here and we'll go just have a default set maybe. I could totally see multitasking on this thing being pretty cool. If I had my Google Docs or whatever on this top one, I'm like doing stuff and then I have my research here. If I just Google research, that's pretty cool, man. But you can see I have like two full 16 by 9 displays here. Now, if I close it with an application open, what happens? Oh, goodbye my one research window. >> [laughter] >> Is it going to come back? Oh, there you go. Oh, wow, it definitely kind of messes it up there. [music] Will it pick it back up if I open it? Okay, so it could have some memory to it, right? You kind of finish your work at a coffee shop, you close it, you know, go on a drive, go to work, whatever, get back and open it again, and all your Windows are in the same spot. I'm kind of flabbergasted. I don't really know what else to say about this display. It's really cool, but I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of someone who would like buy this. Am I buying it because I want the extra productivity, or am I buying it because I hope someone notices my extra 2.7 inches? You know, like I will say, now that I have the screen up like this, I've noticed on my feed that it's kind of harder for you guys to see, and when I tip it, you can see it a little bit easier. I see that a little bit here. It's not as dramatic as the cameras making it out to be, so viewing angles on this thing could be an issue for you. I mean, even definitely like this, it's harder to see, but you're not going to use your laptop like that, so it's just something to keep in mind. But, we're going to do a typing test here. I hate the trackpad. Will I hate the keyboard? We're about to find out. Actually, no. The key travel is really short though. I am not the fastest typer though. It feels closest to like a butterfly keyboard on like a MacBook or something like that, which not a lot of people like, but I also know a lot of people are die hard fans of that keyboard. So, that's going to be a personal preference choice for you. For me, compared to my daily driver, which I really enjoy this keyboard, the keystrokes on this are a lot longer, and it feels a little bit nicer to type on. I feel like a good typer could type faster on this [music] one though. One of our last hardware tests before we get into some gaming here is I want to test the camera and the microphone. So, this is what the webcam looks like. This is what the audio from the microphone sounds like. Oh, you know what though? I don't like the angle of this. I almost went like fully out of frame there. Whoop! There we go. Oh. So business class professional. Actually though, one of the things I hate about my laptop is doing video calls on my laptop because if I actually want to see people and interact with them while working on something, it's kind of a hassle, right? But with this, I could now move my video call to the bottom, even bottom third for example, so I can see everyone's faces and then in the top two thirds I could have my work. That's actually seems pretty compelling to me as someone who does a lot of video calls on just my laptop. This manual is telling me I can use the force to open this. These are terrible instructions though. It just says go to gear and then it just shows finger. Like what what the hell is that supposed to mean, dude? So I found out that there are apparently hand gestures that you can do to open it and I wanted to give it a try. Apparently it's in this app, the ThinkBook Workplace, but every time I click on it, it's not opening. So I won't be able to configure it because it's off by default. Okay, we're taking a slight detour. Locking in for the YouTube shorts grind. Damn, look >> [laughter] >> Oh, dude. It's pretty good, eh? It fits like the whole frame. Oh, heck yeah. Actually, if you can turn your laptop sideways and like watch a movie. Hold on. Hold on. Sorry, I'm I'm going going a little crazy here. Display. Display orientation. Why? No! I don't like that. I don't know if you guys can catch that. It default switches it. So I have it set to portrait here. If I click on it and choose landscape, it does it and then it just goes here. It's like, \"Do do to keep these? Well, no, I want it I was thinking about if you like had the just like laid the laptop like this you could watch a sick movie, you know. Ah, yeah. >> [laughter] >> Little privacy shield so no screen peakers, you know? Oh, dude. Missed opportunity. But to be honest, that's probably for the best. Okay, let's game. Let's game. This is not a gaming laptop. I am immediately not getting good FPS. This is a rough gaming experience. I didn't double-check which settings were on. So, let me quickly look here. Controls. Oh, ray tracing's on low. That's probably why. I'm going to turn ray tracing off. I'm going to turn to medium settings with no resolution scaling. Okay. >> [laughter] >> It adapted to the new resolution, but I can't really tell if it's doing it properly or not cuz my my UI is like this big in the bottom. Let me Let me look in the settings here and see what it actually did. No, so it kept the original resolution of 2000 by 1600. I can adjust it to what I have and now it's more fit for the screen even though you probably shouldn't play like this. But if we close Goodbye, gun. It was nice knowing you. And it's right here when it clicks. Oh. I think it kept the the same resolution, but it now squished it. Yeah, so it still thinks it's 2000 by 2350 this time. So, it just kind of gets confused and squishes it or stretches it. I'm trying to figure out if I like that better than if it just like failed to do it. Do you know what I mean? Like if it didn't adjust it and it kind of was just like like broke and was like, \"Hey man, you need to reboot.\" cuz I have to change the settings anyways then. It's one of those things that's so stupid, but like in the coolest way possible. Oh, yeah. Oh, [laughter] yeah. This is where I wish it was touchscreen. Could you Could you imagine being able to control this like a giant iPad? Woah, actually I haven't looked at the back of this thing. Okay, it looks kind of cool. It felt weird when I reached around for a second and it felt really thin. I need to open this thing up. I need to know what this looks like on the inside. And then I'll tell you guys the price. Cuz then you guys can determine if you think it's worth it. While I'm prepping this bad boy for surgery, we might as well go through our lab results. We're going to start with some of our gaming results, which it seems we did all of our testing at 1080p and as you can tell by our charts here, it does better than the ASUS ZenBook and the Ace Magic devices that we compared it to. And at 1080p across all games, it averaged at 120 FPS, which is the, you know, screen refresh rate, so you're you're kind of getting the most out of the device. So, probably lighter games is what you want to be playing on this bad boy. You don't want to be playing Cyberpunk like we did. And I think a good example of a game that you would want to maybe play with that extended screen real estate is maybe something like a strategy game where you've got like lots of UI elements, but then you still want lots of real estate for the actual gameplay. So, I'm thinking like Civ or maybe like a city-building game, something like that I think could be really cool. We don't have any benchmarks for those games, unfortunately. But, I think they'd be probably fine. Now, another test >> [snorts] >> Another test that we did was our battery life test and this one is pretty interesting to me. What we decided to do was we watched a 1080p video and I know that's going to seem really weird cuz we did that in both the non-extended and extended display. But, when we were running a resolution like that and playing back video, we actually saw almost no battery difference between when it was open versus when it was closed, which confuses me a little bit. I kind of wish we did a test where we got to use the full resolution of the device, because at that point I'd be very curious if those extra pixels would lead to less battery. But, I think that's also pretty telling for probably the average user. If you are just doing office data sheets, you know, kind of like lightweight tasks on this device, you can expect some pretty decent battery still, which I think is pretty cool. I wouldn't trust that while gaming. Uh I I I don't think you'd get much battery life on it then, but for just kind of idle, just chilling, that's looks pretty good. I'm so scared. But, I really want to see what's inside. Don't make that sound, you aren't. Did it bend? Lenovo, I am so sorry, but maybe make your freaking devices easier to get into. Oh, I did totally bend I destroyed this thing. Chat, we did it. I don't know why this looks so much cooler than a standard laptop. Maybe it's cuz the battery takes up like all of it. Like, where the heck is everything else? Oh my gosh. Okay, some of this just clicked in my head what this is. Okay, so these here, one here, and one here, you can see there is a tiny white string that runs up along this way and runs up along this way. I am 99% sure that that is what is handling the motion of the screen. It's literally a string that is wound around this wheel. And so, when you hit the button, it basically just coils these little ropes down to help bring it back down, and these springs here look like they help take some of the load off. Dude, this is so cool. What the heck? Oh dude, this is super cool. Okay, so this is our Wi-Fi card. This is our SSD. It looks like this is a ribbon cable of some sort. I don't know what it's for though. It might be what connects the display to the main board here. There's our 66 watt hour battery, which takes up a huge portion of it. But now this size of battery makes sense. It doesn't go the whole length of the laptop like traditional ones do because they needed to make room for the pulley system of the screen. Dude, sorry. I'm like really excited cuz this is super cool. Okay, so this is the display cable. I just got that confirmed. I want to open it with the bottom open so bad. Would you guys be mad at me? I wonder if it'll yell at me if it'll be like, \"Hey, the bottom's open. You're Don't do this.\" Can you see it now? Yeah. Oh, dude. Okay. We're going to Okay, we're going to I This is really awkward for me to hold, so Okay, I'm going to try closing it again. We'll see if you guys can get a cool angle of this, right? Uh-oh. Is it sick? Okay, I got I I have to do it one more time cuz I actually want to see it. >> [groaning] >> Dude! So that ribbon cable actually like slips under the main board. Dude, this is so cool. So this display cable is something you would just never think of because it goes under the main board here, which makes me think that the whole rollable display actually just goes under the main board instead of like rolling up. Now, as much as I was oogling about the cool gimmick of the screen, how does the screen actually perform? Well, for most of you out there that would probably be buying this type of device, it's going to be fine. [music] It's good enough to do a little bit of work on it. I would say if you're mastering a film, you're not buying this device anyways, but I think you could do some light graphic work like Photoshop or maybe even a little bit of video editing. And it is even capable of HDR. Labs did discover that it needs a little bit of tweaking to get the most optimal performance out of the HDR settings. But again, I man, I don't think that's the gimmick about this thing. I I don't think HDR is the thing you're telling people about, right? It's the movement of that screen. As I am putting in the final screw here, it is time to tell you guys how much this thing costs. Anyone want to take a guess? Leave a comment down below. Eh, you're probably wrong. It's $3,300 USD. For that much money, you could buy a used car. For that much money, you could buy a really, really cool phone for you and your significant other. It is a lot of money for a device like this, especially when you just think about it's a laptop at the end of the day. Saying that, I think that there is a market for a handful of people that really do want the extra screen real estate and are willing to pay for it. Because gaming laptops get up to be that expensive, right? And we can all laugh at that and go, \"Well, you're not getting desktop performance. Why are you paying desktop price?\" Clearly, they keep making them because people keep buying them. So, I think there is a market for this kind of gimmick and this kind of laptop. I would never spend that much money on this, but I would happily use my friends who do. I don't know. Let me know what you guys think. If you guys enjoyed this laptop video, go check out the time I covered the Framework 16. That laptop's gimmick is the fact that you can upgrade the GPU. It's unbelievably cool and also suffers from being too expensive."}
